    Two Stories

Every cemetery tells two stories. One is written on the headstones. The other was never carved in stone.

This tour is about the ones that were never etched.

Why some of the people here lie beneath a name that was never theirs.

Why a town of fourteen hundred people sent eight hundred of them to the funeral of an eighteen-year-old gatekeeper.

Why another seventeen-year-old has a headstone standing nowhere near his body.

Why a grave lay here undisturbed for over a century before anyone worked out who was in it.

Why two women were recorded in this ground for a hundred and fifty years, when neither of them was ever here at all — lost to a single letter.

And how a family of Highlanders, driven out by famine, came to fill more graves here than anybody else.

Triumphs, tragedies, and people who were only ever passing through. About 9 minutes on foot.

The tour starts at the front gates, and everything I tell you assumes you are facing the back of the cemetery. You can help us guide you by sharing your location. Nothing personal is shared, and nothing is kept once you leave.

When you are ready, press Yes, take me round. If you would rather not, press Not now.

    How the tour works

    Welcome aboard.

We begin just inside the gates. Turn to your right and you will see a small headstone sitting between two huge pines. That is our first stop, and while we walk over I will show you how this works. It takes about 11 minutes on foot.

The stories are on the right of your screen. The map is on the left. The red circle is where we are going. The red lines and arrows are how to get there. If you have shared your location, you are the blue circle.

Your phone is about to ask permission to share that location. Please allow it while using the app — it is what lets me walk you from stop to stop. We do not keep or share any of your personal information.

Press Next and we will begin.

    Finding you…
